4-day tour around Catalonia by car

Catalonia is home to some genuinely incredible heritage: historic towns, monuments, lovely beaches and impressive mountains. Its excellent location close to the Pyrenees and right next to the Mediterranean Sea means you can visit everything in a matter of just a few hours.

So that you can experience a different environment every day, we have prepared a special tour for your 4 days in Barcelona. Read on for more details about our tour by car around northern Catalonia.

Day 1: Vall de Núria, nature and sport in the Pyrenees

Nestled among the Pyrenees in northern Catalonia, you can find the spectacular Vall de Núria. This is a lovely valley to visit at any time of year; in winter for skiing and throughout the rest of the year for hiking. A unique experience at over 2,000 metres above sea level.

One unique characteristic of Vall de Núria is that the valley can only be accessed by taking a ride on the rack railway. When deciding where to stay on your getaway, we recommend looking for somewhere in one of the surrounding towns.

All these towns of enchanting stone houses offer plenty of peace and quiet. You might like to visit the towns of Queralbs, Ribes de Freser or Planoles for a classic photo of the Catalan Pyrenees.

Day 2: La Garrotxa, a volcanic area full of Mediaeval towns

The La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park is close to Barcelona and is also perfect for an excursion from the city. This spectacular natural environment is home to more than 30 volcanic cones and an incredible European beech forest, the Fageda d’en Jordà.

The Natural Park is an absolute must-see on your 4-day tour around Catalonia. Not only does it offer some gorgeous natural surroundings but also various towns each with their own characteristics to make them unique. You might choose to visit the Mediaeval town of Besalú, Banyoles and its iconic lake, Rupit and its hanging bridge or Castellfollit de la Roca, the town that sits atop a volcanic ridge.

Day 3: Cap de Creus, the great natural wonder of Girona

At the eastern-most point of Catalonia, you will find the Cap de Creus Natural Park. This impressive natural space was formed by the sea and the famous tramontana northerly wind, which have gradually eroded the land over time to create stunningly beautiful rock formations.

This is where you can discover Cadaqués, considered by many to be the prettiest town in Catalonia. Its narrow streets of little white houses adorned with flowers and its gorgeous coves are another must-see on your tour around Catalonia. If you enjoy art, you can also visit the Dalí House-Museum in Portlligat.

However, Cap de Creus is not only home to beautiful coves and enchanting towns but also one of the prettiest monasteries in Catalonia, the Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes.

Day 4: Costa Brava, enchanting white towns with crystal-clear water

The Costa Brava has a long list of towns and beaches where you could stop on your 4-day tour around Catalonia. Because you could spend four days in this area alone, we have chosen a few charming places to help complete your tour around Catalonia by car.

Begur is a small town that is famous for its coves of crystal-clear water. The small municipality also has a castle with some unbeatable views. However, the coves are the main source of its fame. Close to Begur, you can go for a swim at Cala Sa Tuna, the spectacular Playa de la Illa Roja or the Playa de Aiguablava.

You might also like to visit Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc, two former fishing villages that you’ll no doubt fall in love with once you’ve seen them. You can enjoy a paella with sea views here at any of their beachfront restaurants.

On the other hand, if you prefer discovering towns that transport you back to Mediaeval times, you can always visit Pals. If you’re looking for somewhere more aimed at tourists and with more entertainment options, you can visit Platja d’Aro, Palamós or Lloret de Mar, where you will find all sorts of options to satisfy all tastes and preferences.

If you want to discover all these lovely places, you’ll definitely need a car for this tour around Catalonia. At Niza Cars, we have several different car categories to help us fully meet the requirements of both you and your trip.
